The first question you should respond is: affordable houses for whom?

The Good Envelop detail is critical for:

- speed of construction

- efficient foundation system - requires minimum excavation and zero fill

- works well with Panelized construction -( 4 ft x 8 ft - panels become a cottage industry for locals )

- system even works in swamp or high water table

- panelized is cheaper than modular [ but if you go modular-( box is 12 ft or 15 ft by a max of 65 ft ) then just leave out the slab ]

1 story is cheaper if small project. kitchen size relates to number of bedrooms ( min bedroom size is 9ft x 10ft )

Living room and kitchen size determine economic classification ***use only one dining area and shared bathroom

Why don't you investigate the use of cargo containers for affordable housing.  Several coupled together can make a pretty attractive composition if they are opened up and brightly painted.  I've seen several articles about using them, and some cargo shippers say that it is too expensive to ship empties back to their origin, so they are just abandoned to rust.

How Best To Have Affordable And Yet Contemporary Interior Designs?  - http://www.ashwinarchitects.com/blog/how-best-to-have-affordable-an...

Food for thought:

Is your theme really highly subsidized housing by the government, not necesarilly for those that need it most? Maybe, that is what most architects end up with.

Is the concept to try to make it cheap by means of construction and materials? No, that is what all contractors do anyway.

Is the concept to question the process and why government subsidies end in a bottomless trench while the problem of the homeless grows? No, usually architects and their teachers do not go to the root of the problem and just look at it technically and superficially.
