Is it really possible to teach design?
How we can teach anyone to create, to imagine?
Anyone can learn to design?
It just a matter of methodology?
Talent is really necessary?.
Talent is genetic or can be purchased?
Is a matter of nature or nurture?

Let the designer you have inside to express and create. That is why sometimes the students leave the school, because it's not in their nature to create, express or imagine. But the teacher give them the tools and technics, and is up to each indiviually outgrow it.

we can inspire not force
When deeply considered, I am not sure these questions can be answered. Of course, the mechanical and technical aspects can be and should be taught (I am counting colour and composition theories, use of certain materials, etc as simply mechanical and able to be learned by anyone). At the end of such a course of instruction, one can expect a competent designer - one who knows his materials and tools and uses them 'correctly', in accordance with accepted rules. So much for the science of architecture and design. What about that art?
Since I teach, I am well aware of individual differences and that much can be nurtured - but it seems to me that there is much that cannot, in fact, truly be taught. Some things must be experienced personally, and this is something one cannot do for others, just as one cannot do their critical thinking for them. One can only encourage them to explore, think, be curious, reflect, feel and experience on their own. After that, how they develop is largely their own responsibility.

Permalink Reply by Mark Connors on September 30, 2011 at 2:06pm Short-answer thoughts to deep questions :
- yes it is possible to teach design.
- there are techniques/methods to engender creativity and imagination. e.g. free-association, structured transformations, rigorous trial & error, filters & lenses, meditation, catalyst induction (and many other techniques that I don't know); People who study cognitive science and artificial intelligence are getting better at codifying this stuff (but also refer to comment on methodology two lines down). Such analysis/techniques, by themselves can yield darn good approximations of creativity & intelligence - though not in the best or purest forms, competent technique can be enough to fool many people much of the time.
- Anyone can learn to design (but not with the same degree of success/quality )
- Methodology is necessary but not really sufficient
- Talent is necessary - really
- Talent is genetic - and for those who don't have it, it can be purchased but not "owned" (this is a basis for the business of architectural design-for-hire)
- Talent is genetic. but it must be nurtured, exercised and developed.
