l always ask myself WHY (almost) all clocks are photographed showing 10 minutes before 14:00 ?? Until now nobody could give me a certain answer.
l only know l like this image also for two main reasons: first is that both lines are up, which denotes optimism...and second, the longer line may suggest a start point of moving forward...just like a shifter...somehow similar with the old train wheels. (this perception is possible just by the usual knowledge of the Counter Clock movement we have)
Whatever...l don't feel convinced by any of the explanations.

The same WHY question l ask myslef about the form of the chinese spoon. l asked many chinese weiters in restaurants about this, but nobody was able to give a certain explanation. They offered me one as a gift, so much desire of an answer they saw on me... :) Designwise this form must have some reasons why it is formed like this.

But still...WHY ?

CLOCKS...in this time signature are like silouettes of birds fully loaded of wing for FLIGHT and as nature intended, most beautiful in this position...some marketing visionary understood that and made it Process.
My favorites, the Nelson, Ball here, and some of your examples, are displayed slightly different, Only because their design tends to obliterate this natural presentation.

The Chinese spoon displays wonderful Form...and by deliberate design function it sits obediently upright, ready for the hand, holding its residue without spilling, and in any position easier to find than any other Spoon.
Interesting observations...
Cheers
@ Irgeorge: Hmm... l'm affraid l'm not that inspired how to find Ms. Inspiration's explanations about the chinese ...l wouldn't name it PROBLEM...aspect.

@Michael: You might be right about the bird's explanation. It sounds familiar to me (l think someone told me the same thing once before). But though l feel the choice is made from a marketing point of view: to attract / like more... so l think any explanation of yours or mine sound so "childish", though marketing people might be sometimes even more childish than any other specialists :)
About the chinese spoon you also said something interesting about it's position to handle it...it is also plate so that can stay on any table with it's sausages inside too (unlike a normal spoon). But though then why they bring is to me to eat soup with that spoon in chinese restaurants??? Shouldn't they use then only for sausages? Its form is hardly suited to anyone's mouth, as also is its size (to big, to thick and also to plain for an ergonomic inside mouth form).

Still mysteries...for me. :)

it is a smiling face posture, most pleasing position compared to all other pointer positions.

some times mysteries are wonderful.
Speculation: The Chinese spoon is a matter of form follows function. It's easily made from a simple flat piece of clay folded up at the edges. It holds the appropriate amount and when fired becomes much stronger at the "elbow" than a flat piece of ceramic. Simple. By the way, there are also Chinese dishes with the same kind of handle form and they're equally simple. They do have one problem however... If you tilt them slightly up, the liquid contents run down the handle onto your fingers and up your sleeve. Not fun with hot dishes!

As for clocks, it's balanced and easy to see both hands. It suggests a more "optimistic" impression than the hands pointing to 4:00 and 8:00. Again, form and function.

thanks Rick.
looks like l should always ask for a regular spoon everytime l go eat a soup in chinese restaurants, as they do not follow its purposed function. :) l also thought that maybe its a form matter of technology (rather to read as matter of how is it made from clay)...
according to clock's arms positions must be the marketing function. as Raymond Loewy said: ugly things doesn't sell well. so it must look optimistic all these clocks in order to be sold well. hehe...form follows marketing???
cheers.
Hhmm... these recycled vinyl record clocks like the idea, but backwards...perhaps they really are 'behind the times'

Rick - I was led to believe that the design of the handle of such soup spoons was specifically for the function that you didn't appreciate - to let the hot soup run up & down the handle in order to cool it off enough to sip. Just practice the gentle movements of Soup Tai Chi to spare your sleeves.
