is there an open source or very good and inexpensive cad for Mac users?
Kerkythea is wonderful, btw. Podium is simple and good for basics, but I found in a complex model it became a nightmare.

IMSI DoubleCAD XT is free also for commercial use with registration and activation; his interface is like Autocad; it save in DWG (from R14 to 2009) and read also Sketchup.

Let me set the record straight on progeCAD. The commercial versions of progeCAD, progeCAD Standard and progeCAD Professional are not free, but the cost is about 1/1oth the cost of AutoCAD. However, progeSOFT has a free for non-commercial use package called progeCAD Smart! which is charityware, in that they ask that you donate to doctors without borders for the darfur region of the Sudan if you appreciate the use of the free software.
progeSOFT is a founding member of the IntelliCAD Technology Consortium, a non-profit group of developers from around the world who collectively develop the IntelliCAD source code, which progeCAD is based on.
Originally it was an Open Source organization but after years of struggles, and seeing the only development being fostered was by the team of developers the ITC employed, they pulled the plug. It is now what you would call quasi open source. The members who develop ther products on top of the IntelliCAD Engine all pay a fee to utilize the source code in their products.
One thing it is not, is a marketing machine like Autodesk. The ITC doesnt spend a dime on marketing leaving that task up to each seperate member. Their money is earmarked for new development of the technology.
Members have created CAD software from wood truss design, to crime scene investigation, to progeCAD, which is an AutoCAD clone that reads and writes DWG files, has the same commands and menus and is made for AutoCAD designers tired of selling their car to be able to purchase the software. Please take a moment and come over to the IntelliCAD group and join there and we can guide you through access of the software and working with the 30 day trial. Our Company is an Authorized Reseller and we offer an architectural add-on specifically for doing 2D project build documents that is straighforward without wading into complicated concepts and extra burden. A trial of progeARCH and progeCAD can be found on www.icadsales.com

Another interesting plugin for Sketchup renderings
is Podium... didn't know about kerkythea or indigorender...
anyone knows about eventual advantages between those three?
joakimpaz Comment by joakimpaz on December 21, 2008 at 11:04am
About ProgeCAD I can say it does the VERY same you can expect from AutoCAD with a much more simple and manageable interface , but it is not OpenSouce/freeware... anyway you can get a free demo for 30 days, downloadable or sent to you on CD format...
Not sure about the prices but still much more cheaper than AutoCAD anyway...

To render:

Indigo Renderer is a free, physically-based unbiased render engine.
Indigo is free for commercial and non-commercial use.

Thanks Jayo, I'll have a look at Kerkythea.

Federico,

I am glad you could use it and like it. I have read good things about inkscape, as you suggested. Will give it try when I can.
