Hidden from the harsh sun casting shadows on the ancient temples is the Kolymbetra Garden. Enclosed by two sand stone-limestone cliffs on the west corner of the valley is the piece of land described by Abbot of Saint Nord, 1778 as: “a small valley whose remarkable fecundity makes it resemble the Garden of Eden or a corner of the promise land”

The reconstructed garden by the FAI with collaboration from the Valley of Temples Authority stands for visitors to discover on the Sicilian Region of Agrigento.

This piece of heaven made into a productive citrus grove thanks to the elaborate irrigation system that fed their water supply from underground water chambers dating from greek times offer a rest away from the heat of the plateau where the Doric temples still stand today.

The five hectareas filled with olive trees, mulberries, oranges, lemons, almonds, pomegranates and prickley pear makes out of this sunken garden a treat for the senses. As soon as you start descending the smells, visuals and the music to the ears produced by the wind caressing the lush vegetation proof the visit worth every second of it.
