Although the post regarding planning from the inside out did not receive intense discussion I just wanted to go on record that both Gautam's and Michael's comment did have an impact. I signed up as a member in MyarchN and this discussion group after reading their comments. As a component designer/manufacturer it was refreshing to find two people discussing the same perspective regarding this matter in the same conversation. The norm we experience when becoming involved in the design process is compromise which typically diminishes aesthetic value will increasing costs. I look forward to more discussions, which I do hope will be very active.

if designing from the outside in is at one end of the spectrum then at the other end, is designing from the inside out...one suggests that a major tripping point for many building architects is the placement of doors and furniture inside buildings......creating efficient toilet ( a frequent problem being able to see a reflection of the urinal stalls in the mirror of the vanitory unit as one enters ) and kitchen layouts.....usable office spaces et al.
i remember, while working on the kangra house which was sited in the middle of a reserve forest that came equipped with panthers....you could'nt hear a single dog barking at night or day simply because the only place one could find dogs in those days was in the panther's interiors....at the first joint site visit on vacant land, the owner insisted on placing his furniture, planning the interiors spaces, locating the staircase and framing the right views of some really breathtaking mountains.....what we did was work in reverse mode...and i think it was a good idea....one wonders if the middle path is always the best way ?

Define: Furniture;
All of the physical 'stuff' inside the thing you build that either empowers or hinders your life EVERYDAY.
The short list of things not considered as furniture but that meet the definition; doors, cabinets, appliances, lighting, walls, plumbing fixtures, windows, floors...and all the obvious casegood/softgood 'boxes' we know as 'furniture'.
Why are most of these elements a secondary consideration when the sum of their parts makes or breaks the thing we create.
Since we learned a very long time ago how to build things that don't fall down..isn't it time now to plan/create interiors FIRST?
