Naturalism in Architecture

Hi MKDG Sorry for the hasty and unnecessary response, sometimes I forget where I am and take it for granted that my problems are the same as all out there. My apologies n

Gosh! This is so formal, and yet no luxury exist. Just forms of materials, columns of different sizes and form, water and candle light adds finesse to the ambiance. No need of gold, silver or manufactured shiny materials to make this place respectab…

About Me:
I’m a functional artist based in Zanzibar, I believe in logically-eco design where the building is a fraction of the whole. I started of designing furniture out of what people discard and what nature gives, furniture however is a mere part of a whole so I extended the designs out to the buildings they would be in and from there to the settings the buildings would be in and the communities in those settings.
Today I locate the site, set up conservation areas, start community projects, design the lodges, camps or houses and then fill them with furniture, textures and life.
I have never done a day’s work in my life, how can you call a passion work?
I am a safari guide that takes people on journeys of discovery and have a deep love of nature; I try to reflect this in my designs. I believe that form, light and movement are healing and that we have a responsibility as designers for what we create.
I’m lucky in the field I am in as there is no competition, nature will always out design you and you can only hope to compliment her, any higher aspiration is vanity.

No really "How green is your valley"

After reading “How green is your valley” I’ve had a long hard look at what I have done and achieved and the industry I’m in (thanks Michael and MAD). It’s so easy do a funky design and claim it is “eco” but what is in the design and what issues etc have you addressed?
In my case as I’m sure it is in many we start off with what we think is “eco” without a greater understanding of what it actually is and what is involved in true eco design. What I have found is that you need to compromise and deci… Continue

Animism in architecture

"Animism is a word derived from the Latin Anima which means breath, breath of life, and hence carries with it the idea of the soul or spirit. Animism may be thought of as the doctrine or theory of the soul"
Does todays architecture have a soul?

Ha, that's true Neil but I'm perfectly content with the ageing process, since certainly beats the alternative. I am too bursting with ideas to want to slow down very much, and hope to be always busy with one project or another.

Thanks for your reply. Dunkin Donuts and Mcdonald's had just come to Bangkok when I was there, but there were few other signs of Western commercial culture. The klongs were perfect oases of friendly community and calm quiet for study and patio gardening, and I thought it would be the perfect place for retiring when I got 'old'. I was barely 20 then. Now that I'm almost old, I don't want to retire - ever!
