New York Theater Competition - ArchMedium

Our friends from ArchMedium, a website dedicated to organize architectural competitions for students, recently send us the results of “The New York City Competition”. The project was defined as an urban theater campus intended to turn itself into an incubator for new tendencies and talent. The campus was also ought to be a place for New Yorkers - to visit and experience. “For New York City, the campus must become a public space, where the citizens can go to and take a walk in an artistic environment out of the crowded Broadway area.”

The site for the new Theater Campus District is the lot between 30th and 33rd street and 11th and 12 ave on the west side of Manhattan. This is precisely the spot where the High-Line Park is intended to end as shown on the image below.

The competition was open to undergraduate architectural students, related disciplines: like Engineering, Urbanism and Design, and postgraduate students with 3 years or less since graduation. And the jury was composed by Architect Willy Müller - President of the Jury, Josep Ferrando - Professor at the ETSAB/UPC, Maria Rubert de Ventós - Urban Planner and Teacher, Pau Monterde - Theater Director and Architect and, Antoni Ramón - Architect Specialist in Theaters.

The criteria to evaluate the projects was:

1. Define the urban scale and the integration of the Project into a complex environment relating to the High Line Park, waterfront, piers and train rails.

2. To give special value to those projects that have decided to take the risk of innovation and critique since it is the understanding of the jury that this is the primary goal of an ideas competition.

3. Evaluate the success with wich the only panel is able to graphically communicate its message: the atmosphere that the project transmits, and the ability to claim and retain the attention of who is reviewing the panel.

4. The ability to define the proposed program as well as the ability to rethink it and make a new and innovative proposal.

Congratulations to Junyoung Park, Joongha Park, Changbum Park, Changseok Han and Suehwan Kwun from ph4 Studio in Corea for submitting the winning project.

Later this week I will post more albums of the projects that received honorable mentions, second and, third prize.
