What ever happened to the InterUrban streetcar?

Ever wonder why we are forced to drive everywhere, everyday for everything? What about issues of energy, oil, mobility, community, economy? The InterUrban streetcar, was and IS such an unthreatening, economical and humane way to get around. Owning a car typically costs an average person $9,000 annually. The film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, was actually about this very point - our disappearing trolleys. In California, some cities had excellent, clean, quiet public transport systems. They were eradicated by a syndicate of companies (called "Cloverleaf" in Roger Rabbit, the three leaves being General Motors, Firestone, and Standard Oil).
