Profile

Hometown:
Christchurch in New Zealand
About Me:
I am director of Michaelangelo Design (2008) in Christchurch New Zealand. The range of work that we undertake varies from commercial and residential Architecture and Landscape through to Interiors, Illustration, industrial design and finding Eco-solutions.

I have spent many of my professional years teaching design in Universities in UK and New Zealand. It was a great experience especially for someone who used to be so shy!

ARCHITECTURAL INTERESTS
I am exploring aspects of existing technology to innovate new solutions. Automobile design, technology and construction has much to offer the building industry. As a result I am interested in lightweight buildings that can be transported, erected, added to, made smaller and are more ecologically efficient than traditional western systems of construction.

Also interested in alternative solutions/management to street and pedestrian lighting which appears to light up outerspace especially in the small hours of the morning when no one is really using it!

ANOTHER ASPECT
Another side to my experience is in the field of Health. During my career -possibly halfway through-I decided to study Traditional Chinese Medicine! Everyone thought I was mad, a change from teaching Architecture to becoming a student of alternative medicine! Well I completed my studies and eventually founded a school of Natural Medicine in Christchurch which had 5 faculties and approx 200 students. I soon realized that I was no practitioner, although skilled, I found seeing sick people day after day was not for me. My journey into the health field not only opened a lot of doors for other people but for me it fused the fields of Architecture and landscape with health.

The way the ancient Chinese described health was in Landscape terms. 5 Elements and their interaction. Ecology is the same, one system relying on another.

MY ALBUMS (stuff)
Isn't it interesting selecting "stuff" to put "out there"? So what I decided was to put together a collection of "stuff" that provides all of you with something uniquely New Zealand. Over the next few months I aim to create a few albums dedicated to just that.

My albums include:
Design Folio - a selection of some of my endeavours
Mailbox Vernacular - fascinating roadside architecture/sculpture/?
BEX - my cute architectural office companion
Libraries - A selection of contemporary Christchurch library buildings
New Zealand - a series of photos from around New Zealand

WHAT INTERESTS ME NOW
Well thats a good point! So many things... but as well as the design side - I am also interested in self-development and exploring spirituality in its widest context. Angela and are writing books and running workshops to assist others to get the very best out of themselves........

The next book is entitled "the Lonely Souls Guide to Planet Earth - the manual you never got"! We are well into it and hope to have it out in time for 2010 - watch this space as they say!!

So some of my posts will contain some of this philosophy - thanks for reading this far. #:>}

Hi Micheal!
Thank you!
And yes. i love Munich... but the world is too big to stay here all life long ;)
As you teached in the UK, you might know Richard Horden? It's a professor at our university for architectural design. Your ideas about architecture reminded me very much of his lectures.
The octoberfest starts in two weeks :)
but before i have a couple of exames for my prediploma... wish me luck

the cash is decent. we get compensated to maintain our rent stateside and since my zip code is in manhattan, the army is very generous. added to the combat pay and GI Bill the whole thing should leave me with some financial leeway so i can devote all of my time to school for years after returning, which is the idea... it's not all about the money, though. it's been a hell of an adventure in its own right. thanks for the well-wishes

Michael-
Thanks for the comment! My avatar is from northern Arizona (I live in Phoenix), the other photos are from our summer vacation in the Washington, DC vicinity as well as a train trip to New York City.

I really enjoy the images you have as well. I particularly like the materiality of the tile work and bottles in the last couple of images - nice use of color and light.
